STREAM: Big Jesus – “Shards”

Big Jesus

While early incarnations of Big Jesus centered around a sludgy-heavy sound that carried whiffs of grunge and melodic metal, this latest iteration, the one that has solidified its ranks and discovered its musical identity, sounds far punchier and more urgent. Indeed, as the band has moved forward and settled into its current lineup of C.J. Ridings and Thomas Gonzalez on guitar, Spencer Ussery on vocals and bass, and Aaron Wamack on drums, the focus has clearly shifted to an overall poppier sound (in the Torche-inspired sludge-pop sense) that reaches for big, climactic hooks as often as it does for mammoth riffs. If you need proof, check out “Shards,” the lead single from the band’s upcoming sophomore release, One, due out November 5. For a pummeling, guitar-drive scorcher, it’s supremely catchy and aggressively uplifting—a pop earworm with menacing fangs. Few bands in the city have as much upside as these guys.

Big Jesus will perform on Sunday, November 3 at the Earl in support of Weatherbox and Restorations. Doors open at 8pm. $8 gets you in.
