STREAM: Mood Rings – “Hollow Dye (Defected Crystal)”

Mood Rings

With the release of “Hollow Dye (Defected Crystal),” the second single from their forthcoming full-length debut, VPI Harmony, Mood Rings appear to have successfully completed the transition from a hazy lo-fi pop outfit to a much more robust and mercurial post-punk-infused band capable of majestic (if often morose) highs. Now don’t get me wrong. Sweater Weather Forever was a solid EP and “Indian Hills” remains one of the best local tracks in recent memory, but everything about this latest offering points to a much more assured group willing to stretch the limits of their songwriting abilities. The track, which premiered late last week via Stereogum, finds the band running through a gamut of sounds, from the black-dyed post-punk of the verses to the ambient shoegaze textures of the song’s arresting coda. It’s a spellbinding effort, one that casts a propitious light on what could very well be Mood Rings’ breakthrough record. Check it out below.

VPI Harmony is due out June 25 via Mexican Summer.
