Top 50 ATL Songs of 2013

Not to tell you anything you don’t already know, but lists like this are generally more fun than they are illuminating. They’re certainly not prescient of any future success. Just take a look at last year’s list and you’ll find no shortage of bands that have either fallen off, disbanded or simply disappeared (anyone heard from Sleepy Genes lately?). More than anything else, they’re a sign pointing towards the exit, a simple means of emptying the shelves and tidying up the books so that we may clear the path for the coming year.

But, still, it’s an assessment, and more specifically, it’s my assessment, a personal coming to terms with what I saw and heard over the course of a long year that only seemed to grow more fractured and fragmented as it wore on. I generally don’t put a whole lot of stock in identifying and evaluating trends (hey, kids, heavy rock is back!) as they’re apt to be misleading and ephemeral. So don’t look here for an analysis of what Atlanta music was, is or should have been in 2013. Instead, for your listening pleasure, here is a collection of the artists and songs that spoke to me the most this year. There are experimental grooves, rad beats and massive riffs. There are gorgeous melodies and brutal breakdowns. There is chaos, tranquility and hooks galore.
