VIDEO: Cloudeater – “Smog”

Cloudeater - SmogOn Monday, Cloudeater unveiled a new standalone single, the dark and brooding “Smog”, which I described as a “menacing slow-groove funeral march.” It’s an unnerving track, to be sure, with heavy traces of the sort of bleak, dystopian art-rock that Trent Reznor made a career out of in the ’90s. Earlier today, the band released the accompanying video via the ever reliable ALARM, and it’s pretty great. The kaleidoscopic-style imagery, both psychedelic and distressed, feels restless and surreal, assaulting the viewer with a barrage of trance-inducing geometric patterns and claustrophobic close-ups. Overall, it’s a near-perfect sync of visuals, mood and music, and another fantastic feather in the cap of a band that just might be on the best creative roll in the city right now.
