VIDEO: Qurious – “Rubies”

Qurious - RubiesLet me just come out and say that I’m more than a little disappointed in myself for allowing 2012 to slip by without giving more props to Qurious’ stunning sophomore effort, Void Vanishing. It’s such an elegant and sublime record, filled with a spectral, otherworldly charm that flutters and filters its way into the deepest recesses of your subconscious. It was easily one of the best local records of the year and was deserving of far more attention than I leveled at it.

Fortunately, the electronic duo of Mike Netland and Catherine Quesenberry have kept at it in 2013, recently releasing a video for the album’s first single, “Rubies.” Directed by Pablo Gnecco (who also created the projections and installation that form the core of the production’s second half) and filmed and edited by John Manfredi, the video’s woodsy vistas and luminescent light show form an entrancing visual accompaniment to the song’s spellbinding aural tapestry. I’m sure there’s a theme lurking in here somewhere, perhaps one of seeking and discovery, but, much like the group’s music, I’m find myself more interested in how all the various pieces interconnect and the atmospheres they engender.
