VIDEO: Seagulls – “No Longer Gage”

Seagulls - No Longer GageShit like this is easy to fuck up. It’s music that’s relatively traceable to a particular era and entity (No Idea Records circa mid-to-late ’90s) and that’s given to a specific aesthetic (melodic hardcore). All the core elements—the driving, slightly dissonant guitars and propulsive drums, the gruff vocals and barked backups—are indistinguishable from what came before it, making it an easy dismissal for jaded “been there, done that” types too impatient to scratch below the surface. I’ve done it many times myself. But whatever questions one may have towards structure and form, there’s no arguing about urgency. Or heart. Or roaring fuck-all attitude. Atlanta’s Seagulls write anthemic punk screeds meant for pounding beers and pumping fists, and “No Longer Gage,” taken from the band’s debut EP, All the World’s War, is a hard-boiled rager. The accompanying video, shot via iPhone over the course of a single afternoon, tempers some of that piss and vinegar with a banana costume, some oddball hijinks and a 40 oz. of Colt 45, but don’t let that distract you from feeling out this scorcher. Watch it below.

The four-song All the World’s War is available as a free download via Bandcamp.
