STREAM: IRREVERSIBLE – “Side Effects of Living” (Teaser Clip)

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from ambient metal stalwarts IRREVERSIBLE, but on September 13 the band returns in force with what looks to be their most ambitious work to date. The upcoming Surface LP may run only three songs deep, but each track spans well over ten minutes. Sprawling, long-form compositions have always been the band’s strong suit, with the group operating at their cinematic best when their atmospheric riffs and psychedelic sludge excursions have plenty of room to stretch out and breathe. So it would seem fans have plenty to get excited about as the release date draws nearer.

And then, of course, there’s this. Last week, the band released a three-minute teaser clip for album track “Side Effects of Living,” and it has the group sounding as dynamic and focused as ever. All the elements you would want are present — the spacey intro, the colossal riffs, the searching guitar leads and swirling grooves. And while it’s only a (relatively) short teaser, you can already hear the band bracing themselves for the epic journey that’s to come, the looming tidal surge and the accompanying descent into a sonic realm that is immersive and intricate. Whether or not IRREVERSIBLE can maintain this level of intensity remains to be seen (these new songs are long even by their standards), but the majestic grandeur hinted at here certainly bodes well for one of the more anticipated local metal releases of the year. Listen below.

IRREVERSIBLE will celebrate the release of Surface on Saturday, September 13 at 529. Supporting them will be Bodyfather, Degradations and Romanian Airspace. Doors open at 9 p.m. $8 gets you in.
