A few weeks ago, we premiered the lead single from Semicircle’s upcoming full-length debut, Blown Breeze, Grown Grass and We are Part of the Earth, and marveled at the quiet majesty of the duo’s soft-focus songwriting. With “Mechanism of Erasure,” Andrew McFarland and Ryan Engelberger (both also of Reptar) adopt a more groove-centric approach, one that eschews airy indie folk for something approaching post-hardcore tension (I use this description in the loosest terms possible). Maybe it’s the dynamic interplay between the spidery mesh of guitars or the head-nodding pulse of the song’s bass-driven backbone, but something about this reminds me of Fugazi at their most calm and intimate. There’s a definite sense of rhythmic propulsion, even as the surrounding vocals remain hushed and delicate. It’s an impressive change of pace, and another strong effort from this promising project. Listen below.

Blown Breeze, Grown Grass and We are Part of the Earth arrives December 9 via Quality Faucet Records.

Semicircle will perform on Monday, November 10 at the Georgia Theatre in support of Velveteen Pink. Athens five-piece Programs open the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is FREE.
