STREAM: Small Reactions – “Terrorangles”

Small Reactions

It used to be that we had to wait months—or even years—to hear new music from Small Reactions. But with a recently released EP available and a debut full length lurking on the horizon, the local four-piece have been downright prolific as of late.

Not that I’m complaining, of course.

“Terrorangles” is the second single to be revealed off the upcoming Similar Phantoms, and it’s yet another noisy, deliriously catchy fuzz-punk banger that demands to be cranked up loud. For a song that takes for its theme issues of solitude and cutting oneself off from the rest of the world, you’d think it be more of a downer. But it’s hard to listen to the tracks’s adrenaline-fueled drive or the earworm hooks of frontman Scotty Hoffman and not get stirred up. In a way it reminds me of Thee Oh Sees abstracted psych rock—a dark and muscular rhythmic undercurrent feeding into a combustible array of distorted exhortations and feedback-laced rave-ups. It’s taken a long time for Small Reactions to build to this pace, but now that they’re here, there’s no sign of them slowing down. Listen below.

Similar Phantoms arrives October 28th via Bear Kids Recordings.

Small Reactions will celebrate the release of Similar Phantoms on Tuesday, October 21st when they perform at the Earl in support of Beverly. Fellow locals On Holiday open the show. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8 in advance or $10 DOS.
