VIDEO: Spirits and the Melchizedek Children – “So Happy, It’s Sad”

Spirits and the Melchizedek Children - So Happy, It's SadSpirits and the Melchizedek Children and photographer Chad Hess have been collaborating for quite some time now, long enough to have established an overarching visual aesthetic that marries mystical and phantasmal imagery with arcane symbolism. Given their partnership and the consistency of their adopted look, the video for “So Happy, It’s Sad,” the title track from SATMC’s latest LP, feels like something of an outlier, a distinct attempt to partner the band’s shadowy psych-gaze with visuals that are more earthly and corporeal. And what better way to do that than to concentrate on the beauty of the human body and human eroticism? The band’s songs have always been more spectral than sensual, but Hess, whose photography focuses in large part on the female form, challenges that notion with long, lingering shots of a young woman increasingly engaged in the throes of sexual ecstasy. The combination works, in large part because Hess matches the song’s stark minimalism with action that is sexy but elegant and a sharply defined palette that places the crisp black of the model’s lingerie against soft whites and grays. It’s tantalizing and seductive, yes, but it’s also manages to retain a furtive atmosphere that is equally alluring. Watch/listen below.
