VIDEO: Spirits and the Melchizedek Children – “Wrong Turn” (Yellow Couch Session)

Spirits and the Melchizedek ChildrenSpirits and the Melchizedek Children have been touring heavily behind their sophomore LP, So Happy, It’s Sad, delivering their shimmering psych-gaze to the masses, one mesmerizing performance at a time. On a recent stop in Pittsburgh, the band had the opportunity to visit Yellow Couch Studio and perform a pair of song’s for the studio’s Yellow Couch Sessions video series. In addition to a stirring version of album highlight “Song Bird’s Grave,” the group also unveiled a brand new song—a chilling, pensive number called “Wrong Turn.” To my knowledge this is the first new material that we’ve heard from SATMC since the release of their LP earlier this year, and while the song lacks that signature eruption, that burst of shoegaze tension and beauty that’s become emblematic of the band’s best moments, the song’s harrowing minimalism and Jason Elliott’s luminous vocals still manage to draw out the goosebumps and leave a distinctive mark. Watch/listen below.

So Happy, It’s Sad is available now on digital, CD and 180-gram vinyl via their Bandcamp page.

Spirits and the Melchizedek Children will perform a scaled-back set as a duo this Saturday, November 8th, at Star Bar for Corndogorama 2014. Doors open at 1 p.m. $7 gets you in.
